Work At Home - Teach & Tutor Online

While it's a common adage that everyone is an expert on something, only teachers really put that saying into daily business practice. Teachers of all subjects can usually find traditional work in public schools as well as colleges and universities. But increasingly, students are seeking to learn from their own homes. So the need for teachers to teach these pupils is also growing. It's a typical case of supply and demand.

Whether you're an elementary or highschool teacher or you're a tenured university professor, you can now find a demand for your knowledge with online schools. The range runs from the common online universities to the newer primary education cyber schools that are growing in popularity. These schools allow for homeschooling under accredited programs. Teachers work with their students, but also collaborate with parents to make sure the learning child is progressing adequately. It's a win-win combination for those interested in homeschooling and those wishing to teach from home. (See Resources Below)

For teachers, online instruction is also a win-win. Gone are the days of driving to schools, lecturing to a large group of students and hours spent in an office preparing curriculum. All this can now be performed from the comfort of home. While initially work may be part-time, the ambitious teacher can find additional online work by partnering with several institutions.

Requirements will, of course, include extreme organization and self-discipline. But such is the case with any work-from-home venture. You'll need to do your homework (pun intended) on each school's and job listing's individual requirement. Some can provide work locally, for which you might already have certification. But others may require training and certification to provide instruction to a wider range of students geographically. Many higher education institutions are looking for specialized teachers, with expertise and advanced degrees in specific fields, and at least one other is looking for unique course material which you would bring to them for you to teach.

One important note to consider is that teaching online is different than teaching face-to-face in many aspects. In this video, you can listen to actual teachers who pursued the online route discuss this difference and how it's actually made them better teachers overall.

Additionally, there is a need for online tutors of higher education, assisting students in advanced degree courses (master and doctoral). And it goes without saying that multilingual candidates are always in high demand.

*As a final side note, the idea of online teaching is completely unlimited outside traditional institutions. If you can think of something to teach (see my other posts on jewelry making, yoga, etc.) you can create an online course and recruit (i.e. market) students (i.e. customers), thereby creating a home business. One music teacher in Australia currently teaches instrument lessons online, via webcam - super convenient for all involved.*
